Yoga Bio: Pat Shapiro, MSW, RYT

I am the founder and director of SageWays: Yoga for Midlife and Beyond in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Since the early 1990s, I’ve studied an approach to yoga that was brought to the West through the teaching of T.K.V. Desikachar and his students. I’ve taught yoga since 1999 in Philadelphia and Santa Fe. I’ve also done intensive yoga study at Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram in Chennai, India. For many years, I studied privately and in small groups the Yoga Sutra of Patangali and Vedic chanting with Sonia Nelson.

As I have gotten older, my attention and teaching have increasingly focused on older women. As a result, I've written a book, YOGINI: Ageless Women, Timeless Traditionto draw attention to the unique role that yoga plays in their lives.

I also have a special interest in the mid-life years. In 2006 I wrote YOGA FOR WOMEN AT MIDLIFE & BEYOND: A Home Companion so that my students would have guidance in setting up a home practice. I have also have written two other books on women's midlife themes: MY TURN: Women’s Search for Self After the Children Leave and HEART TO HEART: Deepening Women’s Friendships at Midlife. I’m the author of six other nonfiction books, a writing instructor and coach, and speaker on women’s issues.

In addition to group yoga classes, I offer private instruction to individuals, and writing and yoga workshops. In all my teaching, my nurturing style and gentle acceptance allows students to discover the heart of yoga for themselves.
